Chapter Seven

Hudson wanted to show her his favorite place, one that he’d frequented as a child. He could just think and have them there in an instant, but he took the human way instead, on the snowmobile with her holding on to him tightly. He wanted her to see more of the landscape, how the fir trees all wore snow on their branches and sometimes the white rabbits and the birds blended in with the snow. Beside them, his wolves ran, eating up the space with massive strides and kicking up snow. It was a day like this that he loved, the snow on the ground, the sky clear as the machine took them over the wide expanse of wilderness.

Hudson didn’t tell Lux they were traveling on a frozen lake. He didn’t want to scare her. The ice was feet thick, and by this time of the year, no cracking would happen, and the snow was smooth. He made sure to keep an eye out for any bumps that the ice could have created if it cracked earlier. It could freeze together, pushing ice against ice, and create a mound. It could also happen with heavy exposed branches that floated in the water as it froze. He certainly didn’t want the heavy machine to be launched and crash. Hudson knew he would survive it, but his wife, whose arms were wrapped tightly around him, her face pressed into his back, would not.

The trip would take the day. By the time they reached the destination, it would be noon. After showing her around and having a hot lunch to warm her up, they would head back to the igloo for one last night alone. The next day they would be in Odinheim, where he would present her as his wife.

Hudson slowed to a stop, and so did his wolves, who sat by the snowmobile with their tongues lolled out like happy pups.

“We’re in the middle of nowhere,” Lux said as he helped her off the seat.

“No”—he extended his hand—“Svartisen glacier, one of the most beautiful places on this earth.”

“Oh wow!” She pulled her goggles off. “How is it that blue?”

“It’s like the sky. The light refracts through in certain ways, and that gives it that hue.”

Lux gave him a sidelong glance. “I thought you were going to tell me it’s your magic, or Odin, something mystical.”

“We’d never take credit for what Mother Nature created,” he replied and slung the backpack over his shoulder. “I’d like to not get hit by a bolt of lightning.”

“How do we get on top?”

The words were barely out of her mouth before they were on top of the glacier. Below, a group of the thousands who visited the ice structure looked like ants. He’d taken her to an area of ice that was never seen by humans.

“I’m standing on a glacier,” Lux laughed in amazement.

“Hold on to me tight. Some areas look like snow, but beneath is an ice crevice that is so deep, no one would survive the fall.
